The story was an enjoyable book that mainly focused on Wyatt Callahan and Abby Meadows Hart. It takes place in the town of Refuge Mountain, Montana. The Callahan and Meadows-Hart ranches are adjacent to each other. The story is a clean, contemporary western second chance romance. I would give it between 3.5-4. stars. I think it could have been better if it had been better edited and research of facts.Abby and Wyatt had become sweethearts and had fallen in love, but when Wyatt asked Abby's father permission to marry her, he was told no. Wyatt returned to Veterinarian school but wrote to Abby each week for a year—she never wrote back. Then he hears she is engaged to marry Tom Hart. Wyatt will enlist into the military and be away for seven years. But, it's time to return home; his adopted father, Mack, has called all his sons home for Christmas.The story's plot is full of secrets, mysteries, suspense and even has some life and death danger. From issues with the death of Mack, and Abby's husband, Tom, to her struggling with staying afloat. The one thing Mack asked of his sons is to do good deeds and to keep an open heart, especially when it involved second chances. Wyatt will go to Abby's ranch, tending to her animals and being a friend—but not pushy. There are hurt feelings, unanswered questions, and the fear of rejection. Abby is struggling, trying to survive, and find enough work to pay off the debts—if that isn't enough, she has the bitterness of her mother and sister—and her in-laws. When it comes to Wyatt and Abby, it is one step forward and two steps back."It seemed like she was sending him mixed signals. Was it possible she was feeling as mixed up as him?""Her mind warned her to stay away, while her heart danced with excitement at his nearness. Pulled in two different directions, which side would win?"The story has the good, the bad, and the ugly of humans. Overall, the story has a great cast of characters, but so many secrets, gossipers, deceit, and those with self-doubt. Not everyone who acts like a friend is honest—from perfidious employees, neighboring ranchers, and even family members. Throw in cattle rustling, murdering horses, and attempted murder on humans. It brings Abby and Wyatt together again, and while it isn't an easy reacquaintance, it is a friendship that must go through the fire before they can find their happiness. In the end, love wins, and second chances come for more than just Abby and Wyatt—read and find out more.I felt the story lacked pertinent information on military personnel, especially the life insurance of a service member killed in action. Tom was a war hero, yet that was skimmed over—even his funeral seemed mundane and would have been a military funeral with honors. Abby would have inherited as his wife and beneficiary, which would have helped her financially with the ranch and unpaid debts. As Tom's CO Wyatt would have known all of this too; also, the military sends representatives to aid a family. They never go on a deployment without being covered.I have already purchased and am excited to read the second book in this series—The Redeemed Cowboy's Secret Baby. Abby and Wyatt are the main characters of this story in our well written. Both characters are well rounded And you understand the way they feel because of the way that author describes them. The plot was tricky but not too tricky you kind of knew where it was going by the way the author described the villain.
