The first half was good, very educational and well-written. I appreciate and respect Patagonia’s efforts to stay true to their beliefs and their environmental practices. But later on, he starts to get really preachy and even goes so far as to criticize some of his own employees for not “trying” to save the planet because they still wear jeans and drive SUVs. Maybe they have 4 kids and can’t afford a new Tesla? Maybe they’ve already eradicated as much single-use plastic from their home and lives as they could and are carpooling with another family? Maybe they are doing the best they can, and that is certainly more than doing nothing at all. Every little bit helps.He also bashes political conservatives and people of religion as well, lumping them into a single category of nature-haters, and spouts that Patagonia’s support of Planned Parenthood is one of the biggest ways they’re helping the planet - by reducing overpopulation. Whatever readers believe about abortion in general, there seems to be a line between environmental activism to help protect our lands and waterways, and involvement in social and political affairs. How many millions have gone into this and similar issues that could have gone toward some of our national parks?There was a lot in this book that I found admirable and agreeable, but by the end I was so disappointed with Chouinards attitude that I no longer feel inclined to shop at Patagonia before going elsewhere. Surely there are other companies out there using sustainable production practices who aren’t just as big and lofty as every other major corporation. While I agree with the vast majority of the environmental postures of the author I find his position as an owner of a for profit B Corp on a global scale hypocrisy. While he touts a 1% sin tax to compensate for the ecological damage his firm promotes their continued mass production and globalist policies are much the same as “non-environmentalist” practices. There are some golden nuggets of truth with regard to employee practices - ie don’t work for a firm you don’t believe in, childcare local to the parent, and showers in the offices. But I have a really tough time believing a guy who writes that he hates the corporate culture but leads a large corporation. His thinking that he is somehow “different” is a symptom of the entitlement driving many of the really bad business decisions made by people who came of age in the late 1960s. The dichotomy is obvious to external observers but denied by the observed. I think the eco friendly posturing is just marketing to get “the dirtbag” (author’s words) to keep being the core of his customer base.
